Fireworks, Pepsi vs Coke, and the Pride Parade

fieworks2

Saturday night was Firework night. Super fun! I’m not the biggest fan of fireworks in the world… but I am a fan of the other 300,000 people who are. Yup - 300,000 people piled into English Bay in Vancouver. It’s pretty intense. And I must say that the last 30 seconds of the show are always the best, and I do succumb to the oohs and ahhs when something big goes off. Why don’t they just have the big ones? I’d love that. But I guess they have to keep things relative?

Sunday was the Vancouver Pride Parade - where corporations celebration their gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gendered customers. This two hour parade is the biggest parade in Vancouver and also draws a massive crowd of 300,000. I have a thing for massive mobs of people. And yes, I probably mention the words “zombie outbreak” two or three times during the course of any of these events.

I took the Pepsi challenge.

And Pepsi won. I always thought I liked diet Coke better. Funny. I guess that goes to show how powerful advertising is… since I actually enjoy the taste of the competitors more than the brands I buy.

It seems that 3+ days in London is won, and then I am heading to Ireland which is super cool. Where should I go in the UK? I’ll start to make travel arangements now. We can figure out the day to day stuff once I’m there, but I need to book hostels and stuff starting tomorrow.

Jeremy, I read an article about the Pepsi Challenge once regarding why Pepsi usually wins. It turns out that for first tastes, people usually like the sweeter beverage most, but that doesn’t always make it the one they like best for drinking.

When the Pepsi Challenge first came out, Coke (unsurprisingly) had a panic attack and made “new Coke”. Of course, that turned out great… ;-)

So, try getting a bottle of coke and one of pepsi, and then see which one you like better over time. Quite interesting!

Really? That would make sense. Because I always told myself I like diet coke better because it’s not as sweet. Oh well, I shouldn’t be drinking aspartame anyway.

Ya, I’ve heard from food scientists about how Pepsi always wins the blind taste test challenge - that’s why they still do that campaign. Pepsi is sweeter and also has a hint of lime, and the majority of people like it. So, like you said, it does speak volumes about the power of advertising that most people *think* they like Coke better!

And don’t worry about aspartame - there’s nothing wrong with it! While pop isn’t the greatest thing out there, I’d take the aspartame over regular pop with piles of refined sugars in it!
