To V-WORDtarian slash V-WORD, or not to V-WORDtarian slash V-WORD?

Whether it be health or environmental, I’m pretty sure there must be benefits to being a V-WORDtarian or an extreme V-WORD. I eat terribly, and forcing myself to change my ways might help me change this… unless I end up living on shredded wheat like I currently do. Oh wait, no milk. I guess I wouldn’t be able to eat cereal anymore. Or McDonalds. Or ice cream. Or pizza. Or Starbucks.

Anyway. I’ll let you decide. Would it make since to try to be a V-WORDtarian while I travel, or do you think I would get sick? I’ll leave this poll up for a while.

Vegetarian? Vegan? No?

  • Are you serious? No way. (56%)
  • Yes, go veg! (44%)
  • Go Extreme! Vegan!!! (0%)

While travelling it is very important to stay healthy. You will not be doing that going vegan which is terribly restrictive and not available to you in all countries. In certain countries your mainstay will be eggs and fruit, in others, vegetables and pork (very cheap to produce). The important thing about travelling is to ensure that you get protein, use vegetables and fruit that have skin that can be peeled before you use them and drink fluids that are pure.

Especially when traveling, it s very difficult to be vegetarian and near impossible to be vegan. Just start eating sensibly now- lots of whole unprocessed foods- and carry that into your travels.

I was talking to my roommates about that and they seemed to agree. But keeping with the theme of the website, I needed to ask you all permission, ha ha.

If you decide to go vegetarian upon your return from traveling, I suggest talking to a dietitian (or getting a book like “Becoming Vegetarian,” which is written by a dietitian) to make sure you are eating healthily (heck, even if you aren’t going vegetarian, it wouldn’t hurt to talk to a dietitian about healthy eating!). It’s quite easy to get all the nutrients you need as a vegetarian if you spend a bit of time learning about it (especially in a place like Victoria!)

Jeremy, you have great ambitions however…I will bet $20 that you cannot go vegetarian (abstain from consuming any form of meat) for 30 days be it now or while on your trip. What do you say?

Cheers,

Rex

Good idea Beth. I certainly wouldn’t want to die due to lack of nutrients ha ha. I guess that’s why people become experts in these fields. And I am sure you are very aware of all of my unhealthy food decisions. Do you think it would be possible to backpack (cheap) and be a vegetarian?

So Rex… $20 ‘eh? Am I allowed to eat eggs / milk? I’m intrigued…

I am a dietiitan and while travelling do not try Vegan. You need protein and many countries do not have what you need unless you look for it. Quinua is a total protein but you will only find that in South America or in stores in Europe and Australia which are the countries you are visiting. So as long as you are in European countries you can eat whatever you want. having said that, since you want to travel on a shoestring, eat eggs, soy products and fruits (with peel on) and veggies.

Eggs and milk allowed. I will even give you the $20 before the challenge begins and rely on the honor system. If make it 30 days you keep the $, if not, you give the $20 back. Do you have a PayPal account?

Cheers,

Rex

I agree with Gail, traveling is unpredictable, stick with a balanced diet as much as possible. And besides why not enjoy local delicacies?

Here’s an interesting podcast on striking the balance for vegetarians…getting some pretty heated comments too!

I have a lot of respect for someone who can stick to being vegan. It’s a lot of work figuring out what you can and can’t eat it seems. Even vegetarian seems like a pretty big effort. It’s pretty much the main reason why I’ve never tried it.
