Where should I head first (after London?)

Wow we’re really getting close to the departure date. Jess and Lee made some great suggestions: stay in a few hostels in London. Sounds like a plan to me. Do you think I should try to find someone to stay with on courchsurfing.com as well?

Here’s a map of the Eurail system.

How long should I stay in London for?

Oh yes, and I’m also in the market for digital cameras. Any ideas?

Cameras - Small and light, but make sure it’s not one that breaks easily. Nothing worse than carrying around a broken camera on a dream trip. Definitely digital.

Definitely visit Ireland as you’re in the neighborhood. Seems like a steep train cost, so I guess prices have risen since I visited. Still, it’s a wonderful country - great music, beer, and people.

Cool, thanks Katie!

Dave - I think I’m wrong about the cost. I was looking at a Britpass (unlimited travel in the UK). A direct London to Dublin train/ferry ticket is 26 pounds… So like $60? Not too bad at all. But thanks for your suggestion. I’m excited to see what happens.

This is a great site. Check out the whole section of rail travel, cost savers, and the great map of point to point ticket costs. http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/plan_menu.htm

Jer,
Don’t miss Ireland mate! You’ll love it! Flights over from London can be found for really cheap too. Try Ryanair……best known for cheap-ass deals!

A SonyEricsson k800i can be both your phone, digital camera, walkman… and a cheep navigation aid if you couple it with a cheap (£25) bluetooth GPS device.

Otherwise Sony T series are slim, small, durable and decent quality (but pricy).

This may cause some controversy…. go to Scotland instead of Ireland :-)

Head up to Scottland and play a round of golf at St. Andrews “Balgove course”. It’s not a hard course, not terribly expensive, absolutely beautiful (right on the ocean), and a great piece of world sports history.

Also, Edinburgh is fantastic!

Hey hey,

I live in London but unfortunately can’t offer up my couch because I live with housemates that aren’t quite into the whole couchsurfing spirit the way I am (or the way I want to be!). But thought I’d suggest a hostel - Barmy Badger in Earl’s Court is one of my favourites in the world. I lived there 5 years ago for 5 months when I first arrived. Smallish and friendly.

Any questions give me a shout,
Kirsty

Hey Kristy! Thanks for stopping by. The Barmy Badger sounds like it’s straight out of Harry Potter.

Rex and David… I think I might have to put a poll up soon asking about Scotland :P

@Wakingdream, looks like you got your wish. I’m heading to Ireland!
