La Tomatina or no tomatoes!

La Tomatina

In the last week of August, in the tiny town of Bunol, Spain, thousands of people throw tomatoes in the street during La Tomatina: a food fight of epic proportions.

Unfortunately, all the hostels in the surrounding areas are booked up and finding a place to stay to would be a challenge. But Kristy from travoholic has suggested that I make my way down there and give it a shot anyway.

The adventure you’ve designed so far looks something like this:

Arrive in London on Tuesday the 21st. Stay for 3ish days, then head to Ireland on the Friday or Saturday.

Here’s the next branch: I could head to Scotland before Ireland as per Rex and David’s suggestion; or I could go right to Ireland (and start using my Eurail pass) and chill there for a bit; or I could hit up Ireland later and make my way to France and train train train down to Spain and try to catch the tomato festival.

I can’t afford the available $120 canadian hotel rooms, but I’m sure with enough coffee I could somehow make it work. And if not, the failure would be an interesting story nonetheless. The only issue is what am I going to do with my lap top. I’m totally up to carrying it around… but not when people would be throwing tomatoes at me, ha ha. If you vote yes, try to think of an idea :D.

So it’s time again to choose my adventure!

Post London, I should…

Hey cheers for the plug. Ok two things… there’s no point spending just a night in Ireland and there’s no point starting your Eurail there. Buses are pretty cheap and trains only go to a few places anyways. I’d just buy point to point bus tix and save your pass till mainland Europe. If you go to Ireland make sure you have enough time to get out of Dublin.

Oh and I think people tend to stay in Valancia then train it to Bunol party and stumble back to Valencia at some point. Or are there no hostels in Valancia either? If not, whack your bag in a train locker or see if you can leave it at a hostel (book some nights for after the festival if you can) then wing it!

Good luck!

Still hostels available in Valencia, then you can travel onto Ibiza and the Cafe del Mar (just off shore from Valencia).

Check out this website for travel ideas around the festival.

Hey Jeremy
I think you should definitely check out the tomato fest, I’ve heard it’s amazing and you can be in those other places any other time. The tomato fest is only once a year!
As for your laptop, I’m sure you could find a safety deposit box in a hotel somewhere for a relatively small fee for a few hours.

Have fun!!!

Ha ha thanks for the reassurance Robin. I’m sure it would be cool to head down to Spain and start my adventures there.

Secutity:

Bag storage is still available. Virtually every major station has storage lockers or a luggage-checking service where, for about $5 a day, you can leave your luggage. People traveling light can fit two rucksacks into one locker, cutting their storage costs in half. In some security-conscious train stations, lockers are no longer in use, and travelers must check their bags at a luggage-deposit desk — often after going through an airport-type security check. This service can cost up to $10

Hi There

I just wanted to let you know that if you have a great distance to travel taking an airplane from within Europe is cheap. When I last checked on the internet from Milan, Italy to Athens, Greece was only 29Euros one way. So if you have to go a long way and want to get there faster that is one thing to check out. Along your travel I think you chould check out Brugge, Belgium. it is beautiful. Check out Venere.com for accommodations, they have some good prices.
Good luck on your trip, what an awesome idea.
